Telecommunications entrepreneur, Martin Varsavsky founded his first company, Viatel, in 1990. Viatel provided long distance services to customers based outside the US, in particular, Argentina. However, with increased competition within the callback industry, Varsavsky chose to open a new company, Jazztel, in 1998. Jazztel concentrated on developing a fiber-optic network across Spain. In 2000, he began Einstein.net, which planned to rent software to companies, who would access the software over broadband Internet connections.

Martin’s current venture is FON, founded in November 2005. FON is a community-empowered company dedicated to building the world’s largest global WiFi network bottom up. FON had around 700,000 registered users by December 2007. FON has attracted Skype (eBay), Google and BT as partners and has quickly become the largest WiFi community in the world. Martin holds a bachelor’s degree in international relations from NYU and a master’s degree in business administration from Columbia University.
